1. incorporate fun footprints to promote social distancing at waiting areas
Social distancing measures can often seem scary, for both adults and children. To encourage social distancing in public spaces, incorporating footprints, or other art on the ground will promote engaging with social distancing without increasing fear.
2. publicly display the number of passengers currently aboard trains or buses
Displaying the number of passengers aboard public transportation would help riders distribute themselves in a way that maintains social distancing. We recommend having empty, occupied, or full rating, such that those who may be riding alone are not made more vulnerable.
3. promote necessary travel
In this time, a key to social distancing is to promote essential travel, and limit unnecessary travel. As cities and states begin to reopen, use of public transportation should be prioritized who are traveling to and from work, the grocery store, or the doctor. This doesn't mean restricting those who are performing non-essential travel from riding, but rather using advertising to encourage those who are traveling "non-essentially," to consider alternative methods of transportation that require less density. Density on mass transportation opposes social distancing, and it's important to minimize this.
4. increase number of buses/trains running
The best way to increase the ability of mass transit to social distance is to increase the frequency of buses and trains. This helps to limit the number of people per train, while still being able to accommodate those riding.
5. temporarily reduce bus/train capacity
Mark every other seat with a simple marking (such as an x) in the aisle. This allows for one person to sit per row, promoting social distancing on the train, and helping people feel comfortable that by taking that seat, they are able to distance themselves the recommended 6 feet.
